How to Measure Your Baby's Feet at Home
Getting an accurate foot measurement at home is easy and only takes a minute. Foot-length measurement is far more reliable than age-based guessing, as children's feet vary significantly within the same age group.
Trace on paper
Place foot flat on plain paper. Stand child (or hold foot down) and trace around the entire foot, including the heel.
Measure heel to toe
Use a ruler to measure from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe in centimeters or millimeters.
Add growing room
Add 0.5–1 cm to your measurement before looking up the size. This accounts for toe room and normal swelling throughout the day.
Signs of a Good Shoe Fit
✓ Good fit

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure my baby's foot for shoes?
Place your baby's foot flat on a piece of paper and trace around it. Measure from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Add 0.5–1 cm of growing room. Do this with both feet and use the larger measurement — it's normal for feet to be slightly different sizes.
How often do babies and toddlers need new shoes?
Babies' feet grow very fast — roughly half a size every 6–8 weeks in the first year, and every 2–3 months in the toddler years. Check fit every 8–10 weeks. Signs of outgrown shoes: toes rammed against the front, red marks on feet after wearing, or your child pulling at their shoes.
When should my baby start wearing shoes?
Babies don't need shoes until they are walking regularly outdoors. Before that, bare feet or soft-soled socks help develop proprioception and muscle strength. The AAP and podiatrists recommend waiting until your child is walking confidently before buying hard-soled shoes.
What's the difference between infant, toddler, and youth shoe sizes?
US infant sizes (0–4) are for non-walkers (0–12 months). Toddler sizes (4.5–10) are for new walkers through early toddlerhood. Little Kid sizes (10.5–3) cover preschool age. Big Kid or Youth sizes (1Y–6Y or ~31–39 EU) cover school age through early teens.
Do baby shoe sizes vary between brands?
Yes, significantly. Nike and Adidas tend to run wider; certain brands run narrow. Always measure your child's foot and compare to the brand's specific size chart. For online purchases, check return policies and buy from brands with free returns when sizing is uncertain.
How much growing room should be in a shoe?
There should be roughly one thumb-width (about 1–1.5 cm) between the end of the longest toe and the tip of the shoe. Enough to wiggle toes, but not so loose it causes blisters. Shoes that are too large are as problematic as shoes that are too small.
Are second-hand shoes OK for toddlers?
Pediatric podiatrists generally recommend against hand-me-down shoes for toddlers, because shoes mold to the shape and gait of the original wearer over time. For an infant who isn't walking yet, soft decorative shoes passed down are fine. For active walkers, new shoes are preferred.
